Back to the Coaches Corner
How the Silver Ferns turned it around and what they can teach us.
Here was a team that had fallen apart at the Commonwealth Games less than a year ago, but were now being crowned as World Champions. What can they teach us:
-
Mostly it was about selecting the right people in all of the roles, players, managers, coaching team
-
It also required good planning that is systematic and deals with facts and good data. . . and is not complicated and is based on simplicity
-
Understand that there will be no execution of skills under pressure if the skill set is lacking
-
Understand that there will be no execution of skills under pressure if the fitness is lacking
-
Be willing to use the expertise and experience of others
-
Don’t be afraid to make your players hurt
-
Be open and transparent, genuine and authentic. No hiding or shutting down
-
Create an environment where people are not afraid to stumble, that there is no such thing as failure, only an opportunity to learn
-
Create belief as a team and as individuals – self-belief is the strongest marker of all when it comes to predicting success
